Low tide at Franskraal beach
The eeriness of these photographs at Franskraal beach and Uilenskraalmond or Uilenkraals river mouth confirms that patterns of tides in the deep ocean, by the amphidromic systems of the oceans that determine tides. The photograph was taken about two hours before low tide around 8:30 pm today.
From ancient times, tidal observation and discussion has increased in sophistication, first marking the daily recurrence, then tides' relationship to the sun and moon. Pytheas related spring tides to the phase of the moon around 325 BC.
In the 2nd century BC, the Babylonian astronomer, Seleucus of Seleucia theorized that tides were caused by the moon, and that it varied in time and strength in different parts of the world.
The first tide table in China was recorded in 1056 AD primarily for visitors wishing to see the famous tidal bore in the Qiantang River.
The next spring tide will be on Friday, 30 December: See you on the Franskraal beach - with your camera.
